Here is another family favourite .. well almost every south indian family makes yogurt rice and have different variations to it. Here is what I put together for a week day meal. It is typical to end a meal with some yogurt rice in many south indian homes. People eat this with some absolutely delicious mango or lemon pickle. BTW: You need to buy unsweetened yogurt for this :), so do not dump some peach flavoured yogurt in this rice haha …
- Cooked rice – 2 cups
- Yogurt – 2 cups (more or less depending on your preference)
- Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
- Urad Dal – 1 tsp
- Channa Dal – 1 tsp
- Ginger – 1 tbsp
- Curry leaves – 10
- Green chilles – 2 slit lengthwise
- Dried Red chillies – 2
- Tumeric powder – a pinch, optional
- Coriander leaves – freshly chopped
- Salt to taste
Cook your rice and mix the yogurt in and set aside. Saute some mustard seeds, channa dal and urad dal in some oil. Next add the dried red chillies, green chillies, curry leaves and the ginger paste. I added a pinch of tumeric because I wanted some color haha … I doubt people add any to yogurt rice.
Transfer this along with some salt to the yogurt and rice and mix well. People add grapes as well to yogurt rice, so if you fancy that you can add it too.
